Monteverdi Vespers Choral Concert by The Standish Consort

Date: Saturday 3rd December 2022 at 7:30pm
Venue: Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Road, Stroud, GL5 2HX

Standish Consort was established in 2022 by the Oxford Alumni Society of Gloucestershire with Mark Wilson as Musical Director. It is a chamber choir of around 20 singers, drawn from Oxford and Cambridge alumni in Gloucestershire and their friends. Mark Wilson is also Director of Music at Pembroke College Oxford and a Countertenor Stipendiary Clerk at Magdalen College, Oxford. He  leads Ensemble La Notte, who specialise in Baroque music and who will accompany the consort in this performance.

Standish Consort rehearses and performs in St Nicholas’ Church, Standish and is available for weddings and sung services. It specialises in early and unaccompanied repertoire. Mark Wilson is an exciting young musician based in Stroud, who graduated in 2019 with First Class Honours from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. He is in demand as a tutor, and enjoys teaching a vast range of music and musical styles to both bassoon and vocal students.

On December 3rd we are giving a historically informed performance, which will see the use of historical instruments, including but not limited to cornetts, sackbuts, dulcian and theorbo. We will also be using historically accurate approaches to the tempi and key signatures throughout. With baroque ‘Special Effects’ such as Echo tenors, choirs of angels and 10 part antiphonal choral singing, we can’t wait to welcome you into a small slice of baroque Italy, brought to Gloucestershire this Advent (mulled wine and mince pies are also available!).

Message from Mark Wilson Musical Director

3rd of December sees the return of Claudio Monteverdi to Stroud as we believe “The Vespers of 1610” haven’t been heard around these parts since the late ‘90s and we are excited to be putting it on in Holy Trinity Church at 19:30pm.

If you would be interested in joining the consort as a singer or booking us for an event please contact Sam Tolley and Mark Wilson
